how to stain concrete
instructional video:
instructions:
1. Clean the surface thoroughly
Sweep away dirt and debris first. Then scrub the concrete with a concrete cleaner or degreaser and rinse well.
- The surface must be completely clean or the stain won’t absorb properly.
2. Let it dry completely
After washing, allow the concrete to dry for at least 24 hours.
- Stain won’t penetrate damp concrete.
3. Test the stain
Pick a small, hidden area and apply a bit of stain.
- This shows how the color will actually look on your concrete.
4. Protect surrounding areas
Use painter’s tape and plastic to cover walls, trim, or anything nearby.
- Concrete stain can permanently mark other surfaces.
5. Apply the stain
Use a sprayer, roller, or brush.
- Apply in thin, even coats.
- Work in sections to avoid streaks.
- For deeper color, apply multiple coats (letting each coat dry before adding another).
6. Let the stain react and dry
Depending on the type of stain, this can take a few hours to overnight.
- Acid stains especially need time to chemically react with the concrete.
7. Neutralize (for acid stains only)
If you used an acid-based stain, rinse with a mix of water and baking soda to stop the reaction.
- Then rinse again with clean water and let dry.
8. Seal the concrete
Apply a concrete sealer using a roller or sprayer.
- This protects the color and adds durability.
- You can choose matte, satin, or glossy finishes.
9. Let it cure
Avoid heavy use for at least 24–72 hours after sealing.
Quick tips
- Work in mild temperatures (not too hot or cold).
- Wear gloves and eye protection.
- Don’t rush drying times—this is where most mistakes happen.
